PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team fell in three sets at Chatham in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match up on Saturday afternoon, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21. The Golden Tornadoes dropped to 9-12 overall, 4-5 in the PAC, while the Cougars improved to 6-11 overall, 3-6 in the PAC.
The men jumped ahead 10-2 to start the match, with junior Paul O'Donnell grabbing two kills and a block, assisted by junior Evan Puhl. However, the Cougars rallied back to tie the set at 15-15. Sophomore Owen Kelley and junior Andrew Ubinger added kills later in the set, but the Cougars pulled away to win, 25-19.
The Cougars kept the momentum, taking an early 10-3 lead to start off the second set. Kelley contributed two kills and sophomore Daniel Spear added a solo block for the Golden Tornadoes, who tried to pull back into the set. Freshman Matthew DeGraaf also notched two kills of his own, and Puhl added another to close within four, 14-10. However, Chatham kept their lead, eventually winning the set 25-18.
Geneva battled in the third set, taking a 10-8 lead off two kills from Puhl and two aces from freshman Christian Parks. Ubinger added two aces of his own, along with a block assisted by DeGraaf that tied the score at 18-18. The Cougars eventually pulled away, though, and won the set and the match, 25-21.
Kelley and Puhl led the offense with six kills apiece, the former adding eight digs for the men. DeGraaf and O'Donnell both added four kills. Freshman Colton Alfaro contributed 14 assists, with senior Joshua Sangrey leading the defense with 15 digs, Ubinger close behind with 13.
The Golden Tornadoes continue league play on Wednesday, March 26, when Geneva hosts Hiram at 7:00 p.m. inside Metheny Fieldhouse.
