Softball Collects Another PAC Doubleheader Split at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – For the fourth straight time in conference play, the Geneva College softball team captured a split in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on a chilly day at Allegheny on Saturday afternoon.  Allegheny won game won, 3-1, before Geneva responded with a 4-3 victory in game two.  The Golden Tornadoes are now 18-9 on the season, 6-6 in PAC play.

Junior McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle in game one, and the Gators broke through with two runs in the bottom of the third to give the Gators the lead.

Geneva struggled to get much going against Allegheny ace Aleya Belardinelli, but the offense did respond with a run in the top of the fourth.  Sophomore Molly Shelley led off with a double and later came home on a sacrifice fly from junior Lexi Zanic.

Unfortunately, that was the only run of the game for the Golden Tornadoes.  Allegheny added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring, 3-1.

Rapp put together a complete-game effort in the circle, pitching all six innings while giving up six hits and three runs.  Graduate student Julia Hart collected two of Geneva's five hits in the game.

Junior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle in game two, and Geneva gave her some early run support in the top of the second, with the first four batters of the inning reaching base.  Junior Justine Robbins walked, junior Payton James singled, sophomore Callie Mangan walked to load the bases, and then freshman Isabela Skrlac singled to drive in one run.  Sophomore Kyra Wilcox's groundout drove in a second run, and later in the inning junior Madison Rapp drove in Skrlac with a single.

Hart led off the top of the third inning with a home run to left field to extend Geneva's lead to 4-0 before Allegheny slowly started to rally.

The Gators took advantage of a couple Geneva errors in the bottom of the third to score once, and Allegheny added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull within one run, 4-3.

After the leadoff batter reached base in the bottom of the seventh off Tvaroch, McKenzie Rapp entered in relief and retired all three batters she faced to secure the victory, 4-3, earning her fourth save of the season.

Tvaroch picked up her sixth win of the year, pitching six innings while giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned), striking out two.

Geneva made the most of its six hits, as no batter recorded more than one hit in the game.  Rapp, Hart, Skrlac and Wilcox each drove in one.

The women will be back in action on Tuesday when Geneva hosts Carnegie Mellon for a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
