WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team rebounded well after a tough first game at Waynesburg on Wednesday afternoon, losing 7-2, bouncing back to win game two, 6-2. The women are now 15-5 on the season, 4-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Geneva actually jumped ahead in game one, scoring twice in the top of the first on an RBI-double from junior Justine Robbins to drive in juniors Lexi Zanic and Madison Rapp.
Waynesburg got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first, courtesy a Geneva error, against junior starter Sophia Tvaroch.
After the successful first inning offensively for Geneva, the Golden Tornadoes could get nothing else going against Waynesburg ace Sydney Wilson.
The Yellow Jackets surged ahead with three runs in the bottom of the third, and they put the game away with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 7-2 win. Geneva managed just two hits in the game, both coming in the first inning.
Geneva once again jumped ahead in game two, courtesy an RBI-double by Zanic that scored sophomore Molly Shelley, who had led off the game with a single before stealing both second and third base.
The Golden Tornadoes put up a big inning in the top of the second in support of junior starter McKenzie Rapp, all coming with two outs. Zanic drove in two with a single, and then graduate student Julia Hart followed with a two-run home run to extend the Geneva lead to 5-0.
Zanic continued to be the spark offensively, driving in Shelley, who led off the fourth inning with a double, to add to the Golden Tornado advantage.
Waynesburg got on the board with single runs in the fifth and sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome Geneva's big lead. Tvaroch pitched the seventh to close out the 6-2 victory.
Rapp earned her seventh win of the season, pitching 6.0 inning while giving up two runs, striking out five.
Zanic had the big day offensively for the Golden Tornadoes, finishing 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs. Shelley, Hart and Robbins each added two hits apiece. Shelley also scored twice and stole two bases, while Hart provided the power with her home run.
Geneva will turn right back around and travel to Baldwin Wallace tomorrow, weather permitting for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
