Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Stays Hot with Sweep of Fredonia

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva baseball team barely managed to get two games in Tuesday afternoon before a thunderstorm hit, but they defeated Fredonia State in both contests nonetheless. The Golden Tornadoes took game one 8-5 before winning the second game 7-4 in just five innings after the game was called due to the approaching storm. Those two victories make it five straight for the men, and eight wins in their past nine games. Their overall record now stands at 19-15 on the season.

Three consecutive hits by the Blue Devils to open the first game gave the visitors an early 2-0 edge, and after a few empty innings from the GTs they made it 3-0 in the top of the third. Sophomore Michael Twigg gave the men their first run in the bottom of the frame, driving home senior Zack Sackett on an RBI-single, and after stealing second he came home to score on a single by senior Eric Gonzalez. An RBI-single by junior Kirk Bearjar on the next at-bat scored Gonzalez, and the score was tied 3-3 just like that.

Senior starting pitcher Caleb Graft retired the Blue Devils in order in the top of the fourth, and despite putting runners at the corners Geneva couldn't push a run across in the bottom of the inning. The men next scored in the fifth, when an RBI-double from Bearjar gave the Golden Tornadoes a 4-3 lead. He came around to score on a wild pitch, and the GTs never trailed after that.

Fredonia scored one run each in the sixth and seventh innings, but Geneva's three-run sixth kept the home side in front. A Sackett double, a triple from junior Aaron Babu, and a Twigg single all plated runs in the sixth inning, and the men took the victory in game one, 8-5.

Graft earned the win, striking out seven batters in 5.0 innings while allowing just two earned runs, three total. Sophomore Cayden Cribbs was awarded the save in relief, entering the game with a one-run lead and finishing out the game with 1.1 innings pitched. Bearjar was Geneva's best batter in the game, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Twigg went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as well, while Gonzalez and sophomore Bradley McGuire each posted two hits.

Fredonia put up three runs in the second inning to gain an early advantage in game two, but the Golden Tornadoes came right back in the third. Sophomore Jonathan Dysinger came home to score on a Blue Devil error, and then freshman Simon Wehr did the same in the next at-bat. Sloppy play from Fredonia continued to haunt the visitors as Sackett scored from third on a balk later in the inning, and finally a sacrifice fly by senior Zach Lemansky gave Geneva a 4-3 lead before the frame ended.

Senior Connor O'Brien scored a run in the fourth inning on another Fredonia error, and then Wehr singled in two more runs immediately afterward. The Blue Devils scored once in the top of the fifth, but the game was called after the inning ended due to a thunderstorm in the area. Geneva got the win in five innings, 7-4.

Junior Ethan Blair pitched 3.0 innings in relief, securing the win after giving up just the one run in the fifth. Wehr led the GTs offensively with two RBIs, while Dysinger was the only player to score multiple runs in the win.

The men play two more doubleheaders this week, with the first one at home tomorrow, April 30th, against Kent State Tuscarawas. Game one is slated for 1:30 p.m. Geneva then heads to Allegheny to wrap up their season versus the Gators on Saturday, May 3rd.
