Men’s Volleyball’s Season Comes to a Close in PAC Quarterfinals

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team saw its season come to a close on Tuesday night in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Quarterfinals to visiting Saint Vincent inside Metheny Fieldhouse, falling in straight sets 25-20, 25-20, 25-20.  The Golden Tornadoes finish their season with an 11-16 overall record, while Saint Vincent advances to take on top seed Thiel on Thursday night in the PAC semifinals.

Geneva defeated Saint Vincent in both regular season matches this year, which gave the Golden Tornadoes the ability to host the quarterfinal matchup.  However, Thursday night was a much different story as Geneva struggled to get its attack going all night, while Saint Vincent got great play out of reigning conference player of the year Shawn McSwiggen.

The first set was the only set where Geneva didn't fall behind early.  The Golden Tornadoes took an early lead, 3-2, behind back-to-back blocks from sophomore Daniel Spear, but neither team managed more than a two-point lead for most of the set.  Geneva used a 4-1 run midway through the set, behind a kill and an ace from Spear and a kill from junior Andrew Ubinger, to grab a 15-13 edge.  The teams continued to alternate points for several minutes, with a kill from Ubinger giving the GTs a late 20-19 advantage.  However, the Bearcats scored the final six points of the set to take a 25-20 win.

The next two sets followed a similar path.  Saint Vincent, behind a strong attack from McSwiggen, jumped ahead early, forcing Geneva to play from behind.  In set two, the Bearcats surged ahead to an 11-6 lead.  A kill from Spear and an ace from sophomore Owen Kelley brought Geneva within 14-12, but that was as close as the Golden Tornadoes could get.  The Bearcats scored the next four points, and despite back-to-back blocks from junior Evan Puhl that pulled Geneva within three points, 21-18, Saint Vincent closed out the set, 25-20.

Saint Vincent jumped ahead early in set three as well.  Two kills from Kelley brought Geneva within 10-9, but the Golden Tornadoes could never pull even.  Geneva could never get a consistent attack and could never slow down the Bearcats hitters, namely McSwiggen and Zebadiah Wyant, and Saint Vicent closed out the match with an identical 25-20 victory.

Geneva finished the match with just a .062 hitting.  Kelley led the team with nine kills, while Puhl finished with eight kills on a .375 hitting percentage.  Saint Vincent hit .299 as a team, led by McSwiggen's 14 kills on a .423 hitting percentage.

Freshman Colton Alfaro led the team with 16 assists, Puhl had three block, and senior Joshua Sangrey wrapped up his stellar career with a team high nine digs.

Geneva is set to return almost its entire roster with the exception of Sangrey.  His graduation will leave a big hole in the libero shirt to fill as the four-year starter finished his career with 1,189 digs, which is fifth all-time in Division III history.
