Rapp’s Pitching Leads Softball to a Split with W&J

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team split its home doubleheader with Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday, winning game one, 7-1, behind a strong pitching performance from junior McKenzie Rapp, before dropping game two, 8-4.  Geneva's record now stands at 16-8 overall, 5-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

In game one, W&J got its only run of the game against Rapp in the top of the first, and then Rapp completely locked down the potent W&J offense the rest of the game.

The Geneva offense responded to W&J's run in the top of the first with three runs in the bottom of the frame, courtesy a blast from junior Justine Robbins.  Juniors Madison Rapp and Lexi Zanic singled with one out, and after a second out was recorded, Robbins sent a full-count pitch sailing over the left field wall to give the Golden Tornadoes a 3-1 lead.

W&J opened the second inning with a leadoff single, which Rapp worked around, and then she didn't allow a hit to a President until the seventh inning.

Geneva added a run in the second when sophomore Aliya Ottaviani came home on a Presidents' error.  The Golden Tornadoes added another run in the third inning on an RBI-groundout from senior Megan Gray.

Geneva closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Zanic and another W&J error.

That was more than enough run support for Rapp, who earned her seventh win of the season with a complete game effort.  She gave up just four hits and one run, while striking out three.

Robbins was offensive star in game one, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a single, a double, a home run and three RBIs.

Junior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle in game two, and her defense let her down in the first inning as two Geneva errors led to three W&J runs, putting the Golden Tornadoes in an early hole.

The Presidents doubled their lead with three more runs in the top of the third, knocking Tvaroch out of the game in the process, and W&J extended its lead to 8-0 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Madison Rapp finally got Geneva on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-triple, scoring Zanic.  The Golden Tornadoes added three more runs in the sixth when sophomore Molly Shelley scored on a wild pitch, Rapp doubled in a run, and Ottaviani drove in Rapp with a single, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Geneva lost 8-4.

Rapp led the offense in the second game with two hits and two RBIs.

Geneva will return to action on Friday when the Golden Tornadoes host John Carroll for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
