Softball Drops Opening Game of NCCAA World Series

GRAPEVINE, Texas – The Geneva College softball team had a tough first day at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) World Series on Monday.  The Golden Tornadoes fell down early and lost to No. 3 Mid-America Christian (Okla.), 10-0, in five innings.  The loss drops Geneva into the elimination bracket tomorrow afternoon.

The Golden Tornadoes were retired in order in the top of the first, and Mid-America Christian jumped ahead early.  The Evangels scored four times on just two singles in the bottom half of the first, helped greatly by a hit batter, a walk and an error.  The only ball that left the infield was a soft single through the left side.

That put Geneva in a big early hole.  Junior Justine Robbins got the first hit for the Golden Tornadoes in the top of the second inning, and junior Madison Rapp followed with a single to put two runners on with one out, but both runners were eventually stranded.

Mid-America broke the game open in the second, scoring three more times.  The Evangels finished the game up with three runs in the fourth.  Geneva had multiple opportunities to get on the scoreboard but couldn't get a hit with runners in scoring position, leaving eight runners on base.

Geneva was only outhit 8-6, but Mid-America bunched its hits well and used five walks, two hit batters and two GT errors to boost its offense.  Junior Lexi Zanic led the offense with two hits.

The Golden Tornadoes will try to keep their season alive on Tuesday with an elimination game against No. 8 Dallas Christian, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
