Softball Stays Alive in PAC Tournament with Win Over Allegheny

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Despite falling to Thiel in their opening game of the PAC tournament Thursday, the Geneva College softball team rebounded well with a win over No. 4 seed Allegheny in the elimination game between the two sides this morning. The women defeated the Gators 6-3, allowing the GTs to move on in the double elimination playoff tournament.

After junior starter McKenzie Rapp retired the first two Allegheny batters, the Gators stuck with a single and a run-scoring double to take a 1-0 lead. Geneva sophomore Molly Shelley responded right away, however, launching a triple to lead off the bottom of the inning before coming in to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kyra Wilcox. That run tied the game, and with two outs later in the frame juniors Madison Rapp and Payton James each singled in runs, giving the GTs a 3-1 lead after one.

Shelley came back up to bat in the next inning, knocking a single through the left side before stealing second base. A Wilcox single moved Shelley to third, and she came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Lexi Zanic in the next at-bat. Excellent pitching from McKenzie Rapp kept the Gators' offense at bay, and Geneva maintained a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.

Allegheny got one back in the fifth, but the Golden Tornadoes answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, with one coming on a passed ball and the other on another RBI-hit from Madison Rapp.

Leading 6-2 heading into the seventh and final frame, the women had a moment of nervousness when the Gators scored a run and loaded up the bases with just one out. Junior Sophia Tvaroch, pitching in relief for Geneva, managed to get herself out of the jam, however, getting a ground ball forceout at home before causing the last Allegheny batter to pop out to the infield. That would do it for the Gators, and the GTs won the game 6-3.

Madison Rapp finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the victory, with Zanic and Shelley each notching two hits as well. Zanic, Shelley, and graduate student Julia Hart all scored two runs apiece, with Shelley breaking the school record for most runs scored by an individual in a single season in the process. She is now up to 55 runs scored on the year.

McKenzie Rapp earned the win, allowing just three earned runs in 6.1 innings of work, while Tvaroch recorded the save.

Geneva was supposed to take on Thiel later in the afternoon in another PAC Tournament elimination game, but the contest was postponed due to weather. The two sides are scheduled to play each other tomorrow, May 3rd, at 10:00 a.m.
