Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women’s Volleyball Wraps up Weekend Tournament

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Geneva women's volleyball team suffered pair of losses on Saturday, falling to the hosts SUNY Morrisville in three sets (13-25, 19-25, 20-25) before losing to Alfred State in four (15-25, 26-24, 22-25,16-25). Once again playing without their top two offensive players due to injury, the women struggled in the attack over the course of the day, feeling some growing pains due to their young lineup. Their record drops to 0-4 on the young season following the losses.

Match one got out of hand quickly, with SUNY Morrisville snagging a sizeable advantage early and coasting to victory. Sets two and three followed a similar pattern, and although Geneva pulled within two points at the end of the third set, 22-20, the Mustangs closed out for the three-set victory.

Junior Gracyn Lee was the top offensive player in the first match for the women, recording 8 kills on a .389 hitting percentage. Senior Heather Seubert put together a nice stat line, finishing with team-highs in digs (16) and aces (3), while sophomore Laura Goonewardene led the team with eight assists.

It was a similar script for the GTs in set one of the second match, with Alfred State taking an early lead and riding it for the set win. The women battled in the second set, however, drawing ahead by three points midway through the frame thanks to a kill by junior Daphne Alexander. The two sides went back-and-forth, with the Pioneers storming back to tie things up, but another late kill from Alexander sealed the deal and allowed Geneva to take the set 26-24.

Geneva jumped out to an 8-4 advantage to start set three, but a 6-1 Alfred State run put the Pioneers back in control. Despite the Golden Tornadoes knotting the score at 20 a few minutes later, Alfred State held on for the victory, taking set four quickly as well to win the match.

Alexander finished the match with 10 kills, hitting an efficient .364 out of the middle. Goonewardene directed the offense, posting 15 assists, while junior Brooklen Helton headed up the defense with 21 digs.

The women are back in action next weekend when they travel to Erie, PA for a tournament at Penn State Behrend. They open the tournament with a 3:00 p.m. match versus the hosts on Friday, September 9th, before taking on Fredonia at 5:00 p.m. that evening.
