Men’s Soccer Just Short Again Versus Mount Aloysius

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – For the fourth consecutive match, the Geneva men's soccer program lost by one goal, adding to a frustrating start to the season with a loss to Mount Aloysius College. The GTs led 1-0 heading into the halftime break but couldn't put a single shot on target in the second half en route to the 2-1 loss. Missed opportunities have been the common thread throughout this streak, and they came back to bite the Golden Tornadoes yet again as the men fell to 0-4 to start the year. It is the first time the men have not picked up a result in their first four matches of a season since 1976.

The Mounties came out with a fire, pressing the Geneva back line consistently through the first 10 minutes and forcing the GTs to play on their back foot. Eventually, the men settled down and began to get the better of the play come the midway point of the half. Senior Gabe Singh was consistently creating space on the left flank, and in the 31st minute he got free and placed a looping cross into the middle of the box. Waiting for the ball was freshman Luke Kost, who got a head to it and sent it past the Mountie goalkeeper to give Geneva a 1-0 lead. The GTs almost doubled their advantage ten minutes later, with junior Ojha Ojha crossing a ball into senior Hogan Kern, but Kern's shot was saved off the line to keep the difference at one goal.

Mount Aloysius began the second half with a renewed energy, and it wasn't long before their pressure got to the GTs. Gonzalo Terricabris broke free along the left side, and his pass to Braden Callahan in the middle wound up in the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.

Geneva maintained its composure after allowing the goal, stringing passes together and finding space in the Mountie half of the field. The visitors began to get chippy in their attempt to steal possession, with the referee showing them a number of yellow cards over the next several minutes. Unfortunately, despite a couple of decent goal-scoring opportunities for senior George Cottenden, the men couldn't break through, and it ended up being the Mounties who came away with a goal late as Terricabris beat the Geneva keeper at the near post in the 86th minute. The visitors held on for a 2-1 victory.

It was a tale of two halves for the Golden Tornadoes in the loss, as they put four of their six shots on target in the first 45 minutes before failing to record a shot on goal in the second half. Mount Aloysius committed 19 fouls to Geneva's five, illustrating their aggressive play style. Geneva's goalkeeper, freshman Ian Lewis, made five saves for the GTs.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the men as they head to Otterbein for a 2:00 p.m. match with the Cardinals on Saturday, September 13th. It will be the first road match of the season for the GTs after they began the season with four straight home contests.
