MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva women's volleyball program entered Friday's contests in search of its first win of the season, but they could not find it against either Allegheny or Mount Union, getting swept by both teams. Of the four different opponents Geneva was set to play this weekend, the Gators and the Purple Raiders were the strongest, and it showed as the women struggled to keep up during both matches. The GTs' record falls to 0-10 after day one of the tournament.
Set number one against Allegheny was Geneva's best of the match, with the women nearly coming back from an early nine-point deficit by way of an 8-1 run fueled by multiple kills from senior
Emily Nelson and freshman
Kendall Anderson. The Gators weathered the storm, however, and went on take both that set as well as the next two to secure the sweep.
Senior
Heather Seubert was the lone highlight for the Golden Tornadoes in the first match, finishing with a team-high 14 digs and three aces. Sophomore
Laura Goonewardene set up 11 assists, and Nelson led the team with five kills in the loss.
Unfortunately, the first two sets of the second match proved to be more of the same for the GTs, with the women falling behind early and struggling to make it back to even. After Mount Union claimed both sets one and two, it appeared as though Geneva might steal the third with the score tied 20-20 late, but the Purple Raiders finished on a 5-1 run for the victory.
Seubert dug up 12 more balls against Mount Union, again leading the team defensively. Freshman
Ruthie Land and Goonewardene split the setting duties, posting nine and seven assists, respectively, while junior
Gracyn Lee finished with five kills for the team lead.
Geneva will play two familiar opponents tomorrow in Houghton and Fredonia, two schools whom the GTs faced off with last weekend in Erie. The women dropped both of those matches in four sets but will have a chance at redemption, starting with an 11:00 a.m. match versus the Houghton Highlanders.
