BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It took the women's soccer team's opponents over 250 minutes this season to finally break through against the Golden Tornado defense, but Geneva finally gave up a goal on Tuesday afternoon against Alfred, and that goal was the difference in the match as Alfred won, 1-0. Geneva is now 1-1-1 on the season after opening the year with back-to-back shutouts.
Alfred came into the match after an impressive 2-0 victory over Chatham on Saturday, and the Saxons had more possession early on. Geneva almost broke through, though, in the 32nd minute when sophomore Rebekah Dick made a dribbling run down the left side and sent a curling shot over the goalkeeper's head, but the shot caromed off the crossbar.
Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster again played a big role for the Golden Tornadoes in the first half, making six saves in the opening period to keep the Saxons off the board going into the halftime break.
The second half was a more even affair between the two squads, after Alfred held a big shot advantage in the first half. The Saxons finally broke through, though, in the 74th minute when Lina Young took a long range shot that was placed perfectly into the upper corner of the net, giving Alfred the lead.
Geneva pushed hard over the final 15 minutes, looking for the equalizer, and once again the Golden Tornadoes found the woodwork unkind when freshman Cassidy Stopchick's long range shot off a free kick with a minute remaining banged off the crossbar. It's the second straight game that Geneva has had two shots hit the crossbar. That was the last chance for the Golden Tornadoes, and Alfred held on for the 1-0 victory.
Alfred ended up posting an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, with Foster finishing the game with seven saves.
Geneva wraps up its three-game homestand on Saturday when the women host Oberlin for a 4:00 p.m. match back on Reeves Field, after the Golden Tornadoes played Tuesday's match down on the grass field.
