Romano and Baker Lead Historic Aerial Display in Big Win over Saint Vincent

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – To say that the Geneva football team got off to a strong start in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday night against Saint Vincent would be an understatement.  Junior quarterback Caleb Romano and senior wide receiver Keaton Baker lit up the record books with an aerial display that has never been seen before on Reeves Field as the Golden Tornadoes put up offensive fireworks at almost every turn in a 55-35 victory over the Bearcats.  Geneva improved to 1-2 on the season, but more importantly 1-0 in PAC play.

It was Saint Vincent who actually got the scoring started.  After a rare three-and-out for Geneva's offense, Saint Vincent's quarterback Jake Phillips connected with Chris Downs for a 63-yard touchdown pass for the initial touchdown of the game.  It was a sign of things to come.

Geneva responded immediately, marching down the field and capping off the drive with a Romano 8-yard touchdown pass to senior David Reid.

The Bearcats looked ready to respond, driving down into the Geneva red-zone, but freshman Christian Hunter stepped in front of a Phillips pass in the endzone for a drive-ending interception.

Geneva's offense really took off in the second quarter.  Romano connected on a 12-yard touchdown to senior Seth Tyson, he hit Baker for a 44-yard score four minutes later, and he wrapped up the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Baker to send the Golden Tornadoes into the break with a 28-14 advantage.  Romano had 277 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone as the Bearcats had no answers for Geneva's passing attack.

The Golden Tornado offense didn't let up out of the break.  After Geneva's defense forced a three-and-out on the opening possession of the half, Romano hit senior Luke Crumbacher for a 34-yard touchdown.  Three minutes later, Romano connected with Baker again, this one going for a 75-yard touchdown pass.

Late in the quarter, Romano hit sophomore Brice Findley on a short pass to the Saint Vincent one-yard line, and Romano snuck the ball over the goal line for his first rushing touchdown of the game.

Romano and Baker wrapped up their historic day on one of the first plays of the fourth quarter when Romano hit Baker for a 33-yard touchdown pass, their fourth touchdown connection of the game.  That increased the Geneva advantage to 55-28 and was the last play of the game for the prolific duo, who watched from the bench as the Golden Tornado reserves finished out the game over the final quarter.

Romano finished the day completing 31-of-41 passes for 484 yards and seven touchdowns.  His 484 yards passing are second highest in a single game in school history, and his seven touchdown passes ties the record, which was previously set by Zack Hayward's huge day in 2012 against Frostburg State.  Romano's eight scores (seven passing, one rushing), are also a school record.

Baker broke the school record for receiving yards in a game with 282 yards on his 12 receptions.  In total, the Geneva offense produced 629 yards of total offense, including 149 rushing yards.  Saint Vincent's offense was no slouch either as Phillips finished with 485 yards passing and Downs finished with 279 yards receiving and four touchdowns.  The two starting quarterbacks combined for 969 total passing yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker Nicholas Ciriello led the team with 12 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss, while forcing one fumble and breaking up a pass.  Junior defensive lineman Coltin Hill added eight stops, including 1.5 sacks, as the Geneva defense finished with five sacks total, two from sophomore Wyman Shaheen.

Geneva takes its prolific passing offense out on the road next week when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Allegheny for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
