BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's soccer team battled hard against a very good Grove City side on Tuesday evening, but they could not come away with a result, falling to the Wolverines 2-0. After winning their first two matches of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play last week, the GTs came into tonight's match with high hopes, but Grove City used two second half goals to bring an end to Geneva's three-game unbeaten streak. The women's record now sits at 3-4-3 overall, 2-1 in PAC play, while Grove City moves up to 3-4-2, 2-0-1 in the PAC.
Grove City started hot right from the opening whistle, using some well delivered passes to work their way up the field in attack. One of those passes freed up Meghan Tischler to take an open shot from the left side in the fourth minute, but an incredible diving stop from Geneva's freshman goalkeeper
Natalie Foster pushed the ball wide left, keeping the game scoreless. The Golden Tornadoes survived the opening burst from the visitors and appeared to get their feet back under them about ten minutes in, creating some possession over the next few minutes. Neither team was able to make much happen offensively for the remainder of the half, and the two sides went into the break tied 0-0.
It wasn't long into the second half before the Wolverines broke through. In the 48
th minute, Ady Waters received a cross from the left side and slotted the ball through for what proved to be the deciding goal. Freshman
Sarah Wells had a chance to pull the Golden Tornadoes level just four minutes later, making a run into the box from the left side, but her shot was saved at the near post by the Wolverine goalkeeper. Grove City did score again in the 61
st minute, with Tori Stevenson hitting a well-placed ball into the net off the volley. That would do it for the scoring for both sides, and Grove City took the victory 2-0.
Geneva was outshot in the match, with the visitors taking 20 shots to the GTs' three. Despite allowing the two goals, the women got a solid performance from their back line, with Foster making multiple impressive saves over the course of the match.
Up next for the women is another tough contest with Allegheny College this Saturday, October 4
th. That match will kick off at 12:00 p.m.
