Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shots Won’t Fall as Men Struggle Against Waynesburg

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The recent shooting woes continued for the Geneva men's basketball program Saturday afternoon, as the team started cold from the field and never warmed up in their 62-43 loss to Waynesburg University. The loss drops Geneva's overall record to 7-8 on the year, 4-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Waynesburg's win boosts them to 6-9 overall, 2-4 in the PAC.

Things started slow right from the get-go for Geneva, as the men did not score their first points till four minutes in when senior Trey Barker sprung free for a layup. Three-point shots by senior Nick Million and Barker gave the GTs a brief 8-7 edge, and then a mid-range jumper from junior Ryan Edwards made it 10-9 halfway through the first period. Unfortunately, that was where their momentum stopped, as Geneva scored just six points over the rest of the half and watched Waynesburg take a 25-16 lead into the break.

The Yellow Jackets pushed that advantage to 14 points to start the second half before Barker scored a fast break layup three minutes in. Barker and sophomore Tommy Coletti each sank triples to keep Geneva within striking distance, but Waynesburg maintained its distance. Solid post play by sophomore Austin Matthews allowed the Golden Tornadoes to get some points in close to the hoop over the next five minutes, but the men never cut the deficit to less than nine points as Waynesburg held them off for the win.

Geneva shot just 16-for-55 (29.1%) from the field as a team, including 5-for-26 (19.2%) from behind the arc. Barker was the only GT to score more than five points, putting in 18 of his own to go with eight rebounds. Casey Keesee led the way for the Yellow Jackets, scoring 17 points. Waynesburg turned the ball over just six times compared to Geneva's 11.

"I'm embarrassed by our effort tonight," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "We're a better team than that – there seems to be no sense of accountability right now. We're going to be making some lineup changes to try and get us going in the right direction. We're off to play our archrival on Wednesday, and hopefully we'll get a better effort."

That game on Wednesday, January 21 is against Westminster College, the team currently tied with Geneva for the top spot in the PAC North Division standings. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
