Men’s Volleyball Topples Mounties in Decisive Sweep

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva men's volleyball coasted to victory Tuesday night, defeating the Mount Aloysius College Mounties in convincing fashion in three sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-16). Sophomore Owen Kelley seemed to be unblockable, finishing with 14 kills and a .478 hitting percentage to lead the Golden Tornadoes to the win. The men now stand at 3-1 on the year, while Mount Aloysius remains winless at 0-4.

Sophomore Matthew DeGraaf earned the first kill of the match to give Geneva the edge from the get-go, and then two kills each from Kelley and junior Daniel Spear pushed the GTs ahead 6-3. The Mounties worked their way back within one point, using back-to-back service aces to make the score 10-9. Geneva responded with a 9-3 run over the next several minutes, getting three kills from Kelley in that span, and kept the momentum for the rest of the set, winning it 25-15.

Mount Aloysius briefly took the lead early in the second set, going ahead 4-3, but that advantage was short-lived as consecutive DeGraaf service aces gave the men an 8-5 edge quickly thereafter. Sloppy play by the Mounties allowed the GTs to build up their lead as the set wound on, and Geneva outscored the visitors 15-4 in the second half of the set to take it 25-12.

The Golden Tornadoes put set three away right from the beginning, getting two kills from DeGraaf and another from Kelley within the first few minutes to snag a 7-2 advantage. That lead grew to 12-5 very quickly, and although the Mounties recovered and played Geneva fairly evenly over the rest of the set, it wasn't enough as the GTs won it 25-16.

Kelley's 14 kills were far and away the most of any player in the game, with DeGraaf the next closest Tornado with five kills on a .556 percentage. Senior Andrew Ubinger dished out a team-best 16 assists, and freshman Joshua Stowe led the team in digs with nine. It was also a big game defensively for Geneva at the net, with the team as a whole blocking nine Mountie attacks and Spear grabbing five on his own. As a team, the men hit .351, their highest mark as a team since last January.

The men now look toward this weekend, when they will travel to Virginia Beach for a tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan. They will play four matches across Friday and Saturday, starting with a neutral site game versus Shenandoah on Friday, January 23 at 5:00 p.m.
