Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hot Shooting Boosts Women to Third Straight Victory

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Not much went wrong for the Geneva women's basketball program offensively Wednesday night, with the Golden Tornadoes shooting almost 50% from the field en route to a 99-90 win on the road against Westminster. Sophomore Arionna White led the offensive outburst with a career-high 24 points, and the GTs led from start to finish to secure their third consecutive win. Their record now stands at 6-10 overall, 3-4 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, with Westminster sporting the same exact record.

Things went well right from the beginning for the women, who scored the first 12 points of the game to take a double-digit advantage just two and a half minutes in. After White and junior Aizlyn Thompson hit back-to-back three-pointers, Westminster called a timeout, and the Titans were able to work their way back to a four-point deficit toward the end of the first quarter. A layup by senior Emily Garvin right at the end of the frame, however, allowed the GTs to take a 27-21 lead into the break.

The difference remained around 5 or 6 points for the first several minutes of the next period until a three-pointer by sophomore Destanie McCullough sandwiched by two more White triples over the span of three possessions broke the game wide open. Freshman Kira Bonanno got a layup to fall immediately afterward, capping off an 11-0 Geneva run and giving the Golden Tornadoes their largest lead of the game to that point at 42-25. The difference remained in double figures until halftime, with Geneva ahead 49-36 at the break.

An 8-0 run by the women toward the beginning of the third quarter gave the GTs their first 20-point lead of the night, 59-38, with 5:38 to play in the period. Freshman Kassandra Garcia hit a trey to push the advantage to 24 points at the 3:47 mark, but the Titans were able to cut it down to 13 before baskets by White, Thompson, and Garvin made the score 76-58 at the end of the third frame.

Westminster tried to make a game of it in the fourth quarter, scoring 32 points over the course of the period, but the women received ten points from McCullough in the final frame alone to weather the storm. They emerged with a 99-90 victory despite leading by double-figures for the majority of the matchup.

White's 24 points were the top mark on the team, which she achieved by shooting 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range. McCullough finished the contest with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, dishing out five assists and grabbing four boards as well, and Garvin was just denied a triple-double with a 15-point, 10-rebound, 9-assist effort in the win. Thompson and senior Anna Ulmer were the other Golden Tornadoes to score in double figures, contributing 11 points each. Ulmer also blocked three shots in the victory.

For Westminster, Katie Maryo was the leading scorer with 20 points, shooting 5-for-11 from behind the arc. Maddie Syka and Bella Calcamuggio added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The women head into Saturday's game against Bethany on a hot streak, looking for their fourth consecutive win. Tip-off against the Bison is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
