BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva College senior Emily Garvin posted one of the best performances in Golden Tornado women's basketball history on Saturday afternoon, finishing one steal shy of a quadruple-double, but unfortunately it came in a losing effort as Bethany left town with an 86-82 overtime victory. The loss ends Geneva's three-game winning streak and drops it record to 6-11 overall, 3-5 in the President' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Geneva came out energized, scoring the first seven points of the game. Junior Aizlyn Thompson knocked down a three-pointer, followed by buckets from sophomore Arionna White and Garvin. Bethany closed within one point, 13-12, midway through the quarter, but the women finished the first period with a flurry. The Golden Tornadoes scored the final ten points on back-to-back three-pointers from Thompson and two more baskets from White and Garvin to give Geneva its biggest lead of the game, 23-12, at the first break.
Bethany responded early in the second quarter, though. After a three-pointer from senior Abby Shoaff gave Geneva a 30-20 lead, the Bison scored the next 14 points to take their first lead of the game. A bucket from Garvin finally stopped the stretch, but Bethany took a 39-37 lead into the halftime break.
Geneva opened the second half well, grabbing a 45-41 lead behind back-to-back buckets from Garvin, but Bethany took advantage of some cold shooting by Geneva in the final parts of the third quarter to take a 59-53 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Bison extended their lead to their biggest of the game, 61-54, before Geneva fought back. A three-pointer from freshman Regan Kerr, followed by back-to-back buckets from freshman Kira Bonanno, pulled the women even, and it was a tight affair the rest of the way. Another bucket from Bonanno with three minutes to go gave Geneva a 70-66 lead, but Bethany managed to pull level, 71-71, with 45 seconds remaining, and both teams had empty possessions late to send the game to overtime.
Bethany scored the opening bucket of the extra frame, but Geneva scored the next five points, all by Garvin. Bethany retook the lead, but a Thompson three-pointer with a 1:19 to go gave the women the lead back, 81-79. Bethany answered with a traditional three-point play, and Garvin followed with a free throw to even the score at 82-82 with less than a minute remaining. The Bison followed with a basket, and Geneva failed to answer late. Bethany put the game away with two free throws with six seconds remaining to win 86-82.
Garvin finished her historic day with 30 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor, while adding 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 9 steals. She achieved her triple double midway through the fourth quarter. Thompson added 19 points, while White reached double figures with 10 points. Kerr pulled down ten rebounds. As a team Geneva shot 30-of-92 (32.6%) from the floor, just 8-of-38 (21.1%) from deep. Thompson knocked down five of those three-pointers. The women forced 32 Bethany turnovers with their defensive pressure.
Ella Simpson led five players for Bethany in double figures with 19 points. The Bison generated most of their offense from inside the paint, finishing 32-of-72 (44.4%) from the floor, 1-of-12 (8.3%) from deep.
Geneva will try to get back into the win column on Wednesday when the women travel to Allegheny for a 6:00 p.m. start.
