Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women Can’t Keep Pace at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team couldn't keep pace at first place Allegheny on Wednesday night, losing 79-64 to the Gators after Allegheny took a double-digit halftime lead.  The women battled throughout the second half, but the deficit was too big to overcome.  Geneva is now 6-12 overall, 3-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Senior Emily Garvin hit a bucket and three-pointer early to keep Geneva even at 8-8, but the Golden Tornadoes struggled to find an answer defensively to slow down Allegheny's offense.  Geneva scored 20 points in the first quarter, but the Gators countered with 27 points at the end of the first break.

Senior Anna Ulmer, along with Garvin, provided most of the offense throughout the first half, but Allegheny's offense never slowed down in taking a 51-34 lead at halftime behind 56% shooting from the floor, including a 5-of-8 effort from deep.  Ulmer totaled 15 points at the break, while Garvin added nine points.

Geneva rebounded with a better second half defensively, but the Golden Tornadoes struggled to make their outside shots, which prevented Geneva from making a comeback.  The women outscored Allegheny by a point in each of the third and fourth quarters, but Geneva never cut the deficit below 12 points before falling 79-64.

Ulmer and Garvin provided most of the offense for the women.  Ulmer finished double-double, scoring a career high 23 points, to go along with 10 rebounds, while Garvin posted her third straight double-double, finishing with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while adding five assists.  Freshman Regan Kerr pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.  The women shot 28-of-83 (31.6%) from the floor, just 4-of-35 (11.4%) from deep.

Isabella Antonacci led four Gators in double figures with a game-high 25 points. Allegheny finished the game shooting 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor, 10-of-21 (47.6%) from three-point range.

The schedule only gets tougher.  After facing the top team in the North Division in Allegheny, Geneva will next host Saint Vincent on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.  The Bearcats lead the South Division with an impressive 8-1 PAC record.
