BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team faced a tall task on Saturday afternoon when first place Saint Vincent visited Metheny Fieldhouse, and the Golden Tornadoes fell into early foul trouble and never kept pace in falling 82-58. Geneva dropped to 6-13 overall, 3-7 in the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent improved to 14-5, 9-1 in the PAC.
Saint Vincent jumped ahead 10-3 in the first four minutes of the game, the only Geneva points coming courtesy a three-pointer from freshman Regan Kerr. However, a layup from junior Aizlyn Thompson, followed by a three-pointer from Thompson and layup from sophomore Destanie McCullough, pulled Geneva even at 10-10 with three minutes left in the first quarter.
However, the Bearcats finished the first period on a 13-2 run, though, to grab a double-digit lead at the first break. By that time, senior Emily Garvin, the leading scorer in the PAC, was on the bench with two fouls.
Garvin eventually came back into the game midway through the second quarter as Saint Vincent extended its lead to 37-20, but the senior picked up her third foul shortly after and the Bearcats eventually took a 45-29 lead into the halftime break. By that time, four of Geneva's five starters had accumulated three fouls each.
The women managed to cut the deficit to 12 points, 50-38, on a three-point play from McCullough midway through the third quarter, but Geneva could never get closer.
Garvin eventually fouled out early in the fourth quarter, and Head Coach Michael Grinder had to juggle his rotation to try to protect several other players with four fouls. Saint Vincent took advantage, controlling the remainder of the game to win 82-58. In total, Geneva was whistled for 31 fouls, compared to just 16 for the Bearcats.
McCullough was the only Golden Tornado to reach double figures with 15 points. Garvin finished with nine points in just 15 foul-plagued minutes. Senior Anna Ulmer pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while Kerr finished with eight points and eight rebounds. As a team Geneva hit 21-of-64 (32.8%) from the field, and the women's struggles from deep continued as the Golden Tornadoes hit just 6-of-32 (18.8%) from the perimeter.
Saint Vincent was led by Makenna Maier's 19 points. The Bearcats shot 27-of-57 (47.4%) from the floor, 7-of-13 (53.8%) from three-point range.
Geneva will return to action on Wednesday when the women host Grove City for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
