Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Million’s Career Night Lifts Men to Win Against Bethany

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva men's basketball team was lights out from long-range Saturday afternoon, hitting almost 48% of their three-point shots to defeat Bethany College 90-82. Senior Nick Million led the charge for the Golden Tornadoes, scoring a career-best 28 points and knocking down six three-pointers to boost them to victory. Geneva's record improves to 8-9 overall, 5-3 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Bethany moves to 7-10 overall, 3-5 in the PAC.

The Bison scored on their first possession of the game and immediately went cold after that, missing their next eight shots as Geneva built up an 11-2 lead behind multiple baskets from Million. Finally the Bison sank a triple to break their scoreless drought, but Geneva kept pushing as senior Alec Srock and sophomore Tommy Coletti each added baskets to give the Golden Tornadoes their first double-digit lead, 15-5, at the 12:24 mark.

Both teams traded baskets for the next two minutes, but then the Bison struck with nine points in a row to briefly regain the lead, eventually going up by as many as four points with six minutes to play in the half.

Coletti tipped a missed shot back up and in while drawing a foul to complete the three-point play, and a triple by senior Trey Barker the next time down the court sent the advantage back Geneva's direction. Million and senior Jonathan Bertovich also nailed three-pointers on each of the GTs' next two possessions, and the men saw their lead increase to seven points thanks to a Barker three-ball in the final minute of play. Geneva went into the break with a 47-42 lead after a high-scoring first half.

The men came out hot again in the second half, scoring the first eight points of the period behind two more triples by Million. Bethany slowly crept back, cutting the difference down to nine, but six consecutive Tornado points put Geneva ahead by 15. Million drove in for a layup and nailed another three-ball to make Geneva's lead 71-52, their largest of the game.

Bethany outscored the GTs 12-2 over the next four minutes, bringing the visitors' deficit down to eight points, but they could not get much closer over the remainder of the contest. A breakaway dunk by Million in the final two minutes of play punctuated the win for Geneva, and the men saw out the rest of the game to take the victory 90-82.

The Golden Tornadoes shot 31-for-67 (46.3%) from the field and a very impressive 11-for-23 (47.8%) from distance, while the Bison shot 39% from both the field and behind the arc. Million set career-highs in both points (28) and rebounds (12), shooting 6-for-14 from three-point land. Barker contributed 18 points for the GTs, making all four of his three-point attempts, while Coletti led the team in rebounding with 14 boards to go with 13 points and eight assists. Sophomore Austin Matthews contributed 13 points and eight boards of his own, while Bertovich finished with nine points, eight assists, and seven rebounds for a very well-rounded stat line. Co Rose was the top scorer for the Bison with 24 points.

"This was a total reversal from how we've been playing," commented head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "We came out with energy, we shot the ball well and got stops early, and I'm really proud of the guys' effort. We were pretty hard on them in practice this week, and I'm proud of them for getting the win over a talented Bethany team. [Million] played tremendously, Tommy had a great overall game, and we got key contributions by the bench. This gives us momentum heading into a week with two pivotal PAC matchups."

The men travel to play Allegheny College on the road on Wednesday, January 28th, with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m. Geneva won a nail-biter the last time the two teams faced off back in early December.
