PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva men's volleyball team survived a tight third set Wednesday night to come away with their second sweep of Carlow this season, winning the match 25-11, 25-18, 27-25. Their attack was efficient all evening long, with the GTs' hitting .370 as a team. The win bumps their overall record up to 4-4 on the year, while Carlow remains winless at 0-7.
Geneva went ahead right from the beginning of the match, with a kill and a service ace by senior
Andrew Ubinger propelling the men to an early 4-0 edge. Freshman
Aaron Villi made the score 7-2 with a kill a few moments later, but Carlow put together a short 4-1 run to pull within two points. The GTs quickly squashed the hosts' momentum, however, outscoring them 17-5 the rest of the way to win the set 25-11.
Set two did not start so well for the men, as Carlow took a 7-3 advantage through the first ten points. Slowly, the Golden Tornadoes began to work their way back, knotting the score at 10-10 on a kill by junior
Owen Kelley. The two teams traded points for the next couple of minutes until a kill from freshman
Joshua Stowe jump-started a 12-2 run for Geneva that put the men ahead 23-14. The Celtics held them off for a few points, but eventually junior
Aiden Thomas planted a kill to give Geneva the set victory, 25-18.
The Golden Tornadoes secured an early lead again in the third set, with senior
Evan Puhl putting the men ahead 4-1 with a kill, but unlike in the prior sets, they were not able to create much separation from the Celtics. Slowly, Carlow narrowed the gap until the score was tied at 17-17. The hosts took a brief lead, going up 21-20, but a kill by Kelley and an ace from Villi sent the men back in front. A crucial solo block by junior
Daniel Spear gave the men a two-point advantage late, and while Carlow was able to tie it soon after, a Ubinger ace eventually earned Geneva the sweep with a 27-25 win in set three.
Both of Geneva's setters had excellent performances, with Villi getting seven kills and 19 assists in the victory, serving two aces as well. Ubinger also finished with seven kills on his seven attempts, finishing with a sparkling 1.000 hitting percentage as well as 18 assists and six digs. Puhl contributed seven kills of his own on .636 hitting, while Kelley added six kills and a team-high seven digs in the win.
The men play again just two days from now, traveling to Erie, PA for the PAC-AMCC Crossover Weekend up at Penn State Behrend. Their first match of the event will be against Penn State Altoona on Friday, January 30, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
