BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's soccer team earned a much-needed win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Thiel College Wednesday night, defeating the Tomcats on the road 2-0. Second-half goals by seniors
Renae Singh and
Abby Stover helped the Golden Tornadoes to their first victory in conference play this season, and their record moves up to 4-6-4 overall, 1-3-3 in the PAC. Thiel drops to 6-6-1, 2-5-1 in PAC competition.
Thiel came out on the front foot to open the first half, with Liz Scheeff hitting the crossbar in the 11
th minute before getting two more shots off over the next six minutes, including one on target. The Golden Tornadoes began to take more possession as the half drew on, however, creating a few chances to score but unable to gain an advantage before the halftime whistle.
The Tomcats had another good opportunity nine minutes into second half, with a line drive shot forcing a leaping save by freshman goalkeeper
Natalie Foster to push the ball high of the target. That was their best chance of the half, however, as Geneva took control of the match. Finally, Geneva scored a goal when a corner kick to the near post by sophomore
Sarah Wells was headed into the back of the net by Singh, giving the women the lead in the 73
rd minute.
Just three minutes later, Stover doubled the GTs' advantage. She received a long pass from sophomore
Cassidy Stopchick about 50 yards out from net, turned and lofted a perfect touch over top of the Tomcat back line. She beat the defender to the ball, racing onto it and slotting the shot just inside the near post to seal the victory for the women.
Geneva outshot the hosts 14-8 in the win, putting ten shots on target to Thiel's five. Foster earned the shutout, making five saves, with the GTs' back line of Wells, Stopchick, junior
Rebekah Dick, and sophomore
Bethany O'Brien putting in a solid performance as well. Wells was credited with an assist on Singh's goal, her second of the season.
The women will now return home for their next three matches, beginning with a 12:00 p.m. tilt against Bethany this Saturday, October 17. Geneva will then host both Franciscan and Chatham next week.
