Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Dominant First Half Leads Men’s Soccer to Shutout of Bethany

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – On a day in which the Geneva men's soccer program honored the 2016 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Champion team on its 10-year anniversary, the current-day Golden Tornadoes played a lot like that 2016 team by scoring four first-half goals on their way to a 4-0 shutout of visiting Bethany on Saturday afternoon.  Geneva is now undefeated in its last seven matches and improved to 7-2-3 overall, 5-1-2 in the PAC.

It took the men less than four minutes to get on the board as the Golden Tornadoes wore the gold jerseys from the 2016 season in honor of that championship-winning squad.  Sophomore Msafiri Amisi beat his man off the dribble to end line and fed a ball across the box to sophomore Luke Kost, and Kost scored inside the far post from eight yards out.

Geneva's attack continued to give the Bison problems, and the Golden Tornadoes earned two penalty kicks within five minutes courtesy strong dribbles through traffic.  The first one occurred in the 16th minute when Amisi was taken down in the box, and freshman Mark Bence converted that chance.

Less than five minutes later, it was Kost who made a dribble into the box and was fouled, and this time junior Luke Main stepped to the spot and converted to make it 3-0.

Eight minutes later, in the 29th minute, sophomore Peyton Landis corralled a loose ball in the box and scored from four yards away, his first career goal, to increase the Geneva lead to 4-0 less than 30 minutes into the match.

Landis' goal was the last goal of the match.  The Golden Tornado defense completely shut down the Bethany attack, and as the match moved into the second half, things got a little choppy at times as both teams rotated a number of reserves into the game.

Geneva finished the match with a 25-3 edge in shots, 12-0 in shots on goal.  The Golden Tornadoes also had a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.  Freshman goalkeepers Eli Stasiowski and Jeremy Teufel each played a half, splitting the shutout without being forced to make a single save.

The men are still sitting in second place in the PAC standings with just three matches left in the regular season.  Saturday's match was the first of three straight at home, with Geneva hosting an important contest against Franciscan on Reeves Field this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
