Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women Come up Just Short in Home Tri-Match

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped both ends of a home tri-match on Friday evening against Saint Francis and Wooster.  In the first match for the Golden Tornadoes, Saint Francis won 25-16, 25-16, 25-18.  In the nightcap, Geneva battled Wooster to five sets before falling 25-16, 12-25, 18-25, 25-23, 5-15.  The women are now 7-10 on the season.

Geneva could never get anything going against Saint Francis.  In set one, the Red Wolves jumped ahead quickly 13-5 on their way to a 25-16 victory.

In set two, the women got an early kill from senior Katie Seboe and an ace from sophomore Ruthie Land to take a 6-4 edge, but Saint Francis answered with six straight points, eventually pulling ahead 19-11 on its way to another 25-16 set victory.

In set three, early kills from senior Daphne Alexander and sophomore Rachel Baird, along with a double block from Baird and senior Gracyn Lee, kept the score even at 5-5 before the Red Wolves again used a run to pull away.  Saint Francis scored six of the next seven points to take an 11-6 advantage, and Geneva never got closer than four points the rest of the way before falling 25-18.

Seboe led the team with six kills, while Alexander added five kills.  Geneva hit .145 as a team but struggled with Saint Francis' serving game as the Red Wolves finished with 16 aces, compared to just two for the Golden Tornadoes.  Freshman Kyla Kephart led the team with 16 assists, while Seboe and Kephart each finished with five digs.

Geneva came out well in the second match of the day against Wooster.  A kill from sophomore Sarah Elkins and double blocks from Alexander and Seboe followed by one from Alexander and Elkins allowed Geneva to jump out to a 5-2 lead.  Kills from Alexander and Elkins a couple minutes later helped extend the margin to 9-3.  Wooster never got closer than five points the rest of the set, with three late kills from Baird helping the Golden Tornadoes finish off the set, 25-16.

The women couldn't sustain the momentum in the next two sets, with Wooster jumping ahead to big leads early.  In set two, the Scots pulled ahead 14-4 on their way to a 25-12 win, and in set three, Wooster jumped out to a commanding 10-2 advantage, finishing off the set 25-18.

The fourth set started the same way, with Wooster quickly gaining a 7-1 edge.  The Golden Tornadoes battled back, though, slowly cutting down the deficit until Geneva pulled even at 14-14 after kills from Lee, Baird and Seboe.  A couple minutes later, back-to-back kills by Lee gave the women their first lead of the set, 17-16.  Wooster responded to regain the lead, but the Golden Tornadoes closed the set on a 6-1 run, with a kill from Alexander pushing the match to five set, 25-23.

Unfortunately, Wooster controlled the final set from the beginning, scoring the first five points on the way to a 15-5 victory.

Alexander led the team with ten kills against Wooster.  Lee and Elkins added eight kills each, while Seboe and Baird contributed seven kills apiece.  Geneva hit just .051 as a team.  Kephart led the team with 30 assists, while Seboe had a team-high 17 digs.  Elkins added 13 digs and freshman Chloe Borisuk 11 digs.

Geneva will return to action next Wednesday when the women host Allegheny at 7:00 p.m.
