BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Three days after sophomore Luke Kost scored with three seconds remaining to defeat Franciscan on Wednesday night, Geneva ended up on the other side of a last-second goal on Saturday against Chatham on Senior Night when the Cougars scored with three seconds remaining to salvage a 1-1 draw. Geneva is now 8-2-4 overall, 6-1-3 in the conference.
Neither team could generate many chances in the first half, which began after Golden Tornadoes honored their three seniors prior to the match in Colin Shea, Collin Yeatts and Aiden Barlow. Geneva had more of the possession, but the teams combined for just five shots in a scoreless first 45 minutes.
The Golden Tornadoes broke through early in the second half, though, when sophomore Travis Miller got a sliding touch on a free kick into the box from junior Luke Main in the 48th minute, directing the ball into the Chatham net at the back post.
Geneva couldn't find a second goal over the remainder of the half to stretch the lead, and Chatham pushed hard late and broke through on a free kick into the box with three seconds left that Owen Holub-Smith put into the net to stun the Golden Tornadoes and finish the game with a 1-1 draw.
Geneva finished the match with a 10-8 edge in shots, 7-3 in shots on goal.
The tie eliminates the possibility for Geneva to secure the top spot for the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference playoffs, and the path to a bye is tough as well. The men will need to defeat Grove City on Wednesday and also have Allegheny tie or lose at Bethany to secure the second seed and a bye. Geneva cannot drop lower than third place, which means the Golden Tornadoes are in line for, at worst, a home match in the PAC Quarterfinals next Saturday. The kickoff at Grove City is slated for 7:00 p.m.
