BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to a close on Saturday against Chatham on Reeves Field, unable to overcome an early deficit in a 1-0 loss to the Cougars on Senior Day. Geneva dropped to 6-7-4 overall, 3-4-3 in the conference and suffered a hit to its postseason chances.
Prior to the start, the women honored their five seniors in Renae Singh, Elliana Zwatty, Abby Stover, Madalyn Fales and Noelle Beare. Beare almost got Geneva on the board in the opening minute of the match when her shot was thwarted by a diving save by Chatham's keeper that pushed the shot just wide of the post.
A little over two minutes later, though, Chatham found the back of the net to break a 345-minute scoreless streak for the Geneva defense.
The Golden Tornadoes appeared to pull level midway through the half when Stover beat a defender to the ball in the Chatham box and scored, but a questionable call by the center ref took the goal off the board, allowing the Cougars to take their lead into the break.
The women put a lot of pressure on the Chatham defense throughout the second half, trying to find an equalizer and then a winner in a match that Geneva needed to win to give itself a better shot at a postseason spot, but the Golden Tornadoes were unable to do so in falling 1-0.
Geneva finished with a 15-14 edge in shots, 7-6 in shots on goal, with the Golden Tornadoes holding an 11-7 advantage in shots in the second half. Sophomore Natalie Foster made five saves in goal, while Singh posted a team-high four shots.
The women are not mathematically eliminated with the loss, but the path to a postseason spot is narrow. Geneva must win at Grove City on Tuesday night, who is currently in first place in the conference, and also have the W&J and Chatham match on Wednesday end in a tie. If those two things happen, the Golden Tornadoes would secure the sixth and final playoff spot. The kickoff for the match at Grove City is at 7:00 p.m.
