LORETTO, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team lost at Saint Francis on Wednesday afternoon by a 4-1 scoreline. The women are now 3-5-4 overall. The match does not count in the conference standings as the Red Wolves are in a two-year provisional status while all their scholarship players filter out of the system after dropping from Division I in the offseason.
Geneva played fairly evenly for the first 30 minutes and almost took the lead when senior Renae Singh's shot from 20 yards out banged off the post 15 minutes into the match. Saint Francis broke though with ten minutes left in the first half on a fortunate bounce when a cross through the box was deflected and went off the post and into Geneva's net. Just a couple minutes later, the Red Wolves added a second goal to take a two-goal lead into the halftime break.
Geneva cut the deficit in half ten minutes into the second half when freshman Hannah Hido played a beautiful ball through the backline of the Saint Francis defense and into the run of senior Abby Stover. Stover collected the ball in the box and shot it past the keeper from ten yards away. Unfortunately, the Red Wolves immediately responded off the kickoff, regaining a two-goal advantage less than a minute later.
Five minutes later, Singh almost answered back, but her open look from the middle of the box was denied by a diving save from Saint Francis' keeper.
The Red Wolves added the final goal of the game with five minutes remaining to close out the scoring.
Saint Francis finished with a 16-10 edge in shots, 12-9 in shots on goal. Stover led the team with three shots, all on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Emma George made eight saves in her first start of the season.
The women will return home and host Saint Vincent this Saturday on Homecoming. The start time is 11:00 a.m.
