BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team started well against visiting Penn State Behrend on Tuesday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse, winning the first set and opening up a big lead in the second set, but the Lions rebounded to pull out a four-set victory, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19, despite senior Andrew Ubinger's first career triple-double. Geneva is now 6-8 on the season.
The men came out playing strong volleyball against a Behrend squad that had swept them two weeks ago. Geneva started the match with a block and a kill from freshman Joshua Stowe, and kills from freshman Aaron Villi and senior Evan Puhl gave the men an early 5-1 lead. Behrend closed within 6-4, but five straight points, including a kill from Ubinger and back-to-back kills from junior Owen Kelley, extended the Golden Tornado advantage to 11-4. Behrend slowly began cutting into the lead, pulling within 22-21 late, but kills from Ubinger and junior Daniel Spear gave the men set point, and Stowe finished off the set with a kill, 25-23.
The second set followed a similar script until late. Three early kills from Kelley and back-to-back kills from Puhl gave Geneva a quick 7-1 lead. The men held that margin for most of that set, including a 19-12 advantage late. However, Geneva's attack went cold and Behrend came storming back, closing out the set on a 13-4 run to steal the set away, 25-23.
That comeback marked the turning point in the match. The third set was close early before four straight points by Behrend opened up a 14-10 lead, and the Lions never trailed the rest of the set in winning 25-20.
Kelley and Stowe opened the fourth set with kills, but the Lions followed with three straight points, forcing Geneva to play from behind. Behrend grew its lead to 11-6 a few minutes later before the Golden Tornadoes pulled within 12-11 after an ace from Kelley. Geneva could not get any closer, though, as Behrend slowly pulled away the rest of the set to finish off the match, 25-19.
Ubinger finished with a line of 11 kills, 17 assists and 11 digs to lead the Golden Tornadoes. Kelley had a team-high 12 kills, while Stowe added nine kills, along with 12 digs. Villi totaled a team-high 21 assists. Geneva hit just .107 as a team, compared to .243 for Behrend, and the men struggled to get their block working which was so effective on Saturday. Geneva finished with three blocks, while Behrend posted 12 blocks. Sophomore Christian Parks contributed a career high 19 digs.
Geneva will try to rebound on Saturday when the men open conference play with a home match against Chatham at 1:00 p.m. inside Metheny Fieldhouse.
