Baseball Struggles Offensively Versus W&J

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva baseball team suffered two losses at the hands of Washington and Jefferson in Saturday afternoon's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener, with game two a pitchers' duel that came down to the final inning. The Golden Tornadoes struggled at the plate all day long, and they were not able to score a run in either game. The losses bring Geneva's record to 8-6 overall, 0-2 in PAC play, while W&J is now 11-2 this season, 2-0 in the PAC.

Game one got off to a rocky start for the GTs, with the Presidents scoring five times in the first inning. Junior Dylan Rowe, who got the start for Geneva, settled down after that, keeping W&J off the board for the next couple of innings. The visitors struck again in the fourth, however, scoring four more runs, and they kept that momentum the rest of the way to win the game 16-0.

Geneva managed just two hits in the game, with sophomore CJ Jackson the only player to record an extra-base hit when he broke through with a fifth-inning triple.

Game two was a defensive battle right from the beginning, with Geneva senior Eric Keaton and W&J starter Brendan Cruz showing off their best stuff. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Presidents finally broke through with a run to take the lead. That proved to be the difference-maker in the final result, as W&J held Geneva to zero runs the rest of the way en route to a 4-0 victory.

Keaton put in an outstanding shift on the mound, striking out four batters across 7.0 innings while allowing just three runs against one of the top teams in the conference. No Geneva batter managed more than one hit in game two.

The GTs will now turn their attention to next week, when they will take on Saint Vincent on Tuesday, March 24, in another PAC doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
