Men’s Volleyball Earns Senior Night Sweep to Clinch Playoff Berth

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva men's volleyball program secured a three-set sweep over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Bethany College on Friday evening, capping off a high-energy Senior Night for the Golden Tornadoes. The men took the first two sets before edging out the Bison in the third, winning 25-20, 25-16, 26-24. With the victory, the GTs have clinched a spot in the upcoming PAC playoffs with one match to go in the regular season, and their record improves to 9-17 overall, 3-8 in conference play.

Prior to the match beginning, the Golden Tornadoes took a moment to honor the three seniors on this year's squad: Paul O'Donnell, Evan Puhl, and Andrew Ubinger. All three have been four-year members of the program, with Puhl and Ubinger emerging as all-conference players last season as juniors.

Geneva started off the first set by taking a 5-2 lead, but the Bison quickly came back to slide in front 8-7. The two sides battled back-and-forth for a few minutes, with Puhl, Ubinger, junior Owen Kelley and sophomore Matthew DeGraaf all notching important blocks. A block by O'Donnell and Puhl later in the set grew the GTs' advantage to 19-15, and the two teams played even the rest of the way as Geneva won the set 25-20.

Set two was not as close, with the men going ahead 8-3 thanks to three early kills from Kelley. Another Kelley kill midway through the frame gave the Golden Tornadoes a 16-8 lead, and the Bison could not make it close the rest of the way as Geneva took it 25-16.

A kill and an ace by Puhl in the first few points of set three put the GTs in front 5-2. Bethany fought back to take a 12-8 lead a few minutes later, but Geneva responded well, scoring eight of the next nine points behind three kills from Puhl. The Bison did not lie down, however, staying close for a little while and taking a slim lead late in the frame, 21-20. Kelley took matters into his own hands at that point, earning kills on three of Geneva's final six points to spur the men to a 26-24 set victory.

Kelley finished the match with 14 kills on .320 hitting, registering five digs as well. O'Donnell contributed nine kills, while Puhl added seven kills along with six blocks. Sophomore Christian Parks had a career effort defensively, notching a personal-best 21 digs in just three sets, and Ubinger led the team in assists with 34.

The men have just one more regular season match remaining, a road tilt at Hiram next Wednesday, April 1. That match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
