GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva baseball team made the trip up to Grove City College Monday afternoon to play the Wolverines in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader that had been re-scheduled from Saturday. The hosts took both contests, as Geneva fell 14-4 in game one before losing game two 5-1. The GTs' record is now even at 9-9 overall, 1-5 in PAC play, while Grove City sports a 9-10 (4-2) record.
The Wolverines opened with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Geneva quickly responded by scoring two in the top of the second. Senior
Kirk Bearjar led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on the next at-bat. After freshman
Luke Troxell walked and stole second base, the throw down from the catcher got away from the Grove City fielders, allowing Bearjar to score. Troxell came around to score later in the inning, and Geneva led 2-1.
Grove City knotted the score at 2-all in the bottom of second, and then both teams went cold at the plate. The hosts took a slim lead in the fifth inning after scoring a run on an RBI-single, but they exploded for ten runs in the next frame to put the game well in-hand. The GTs got two back in the seventh inning but could not get any closer as Grove City won 14-4.
Junior
Dylan Rowe pitched 5.0 innings in his start, allowing three runs and striking out three. Bearjar was the only Geneva player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3, while Troxell was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Wolverines soared out in front to start game two, plating five baserunners to take a significant advantage right off the bat. Junior
Noah Michal got one run back by blasting a solo home run in the third inning, but despite outhitting Grove City 8-6 over the course of the game, Geneva could not pull even, falling 5-1.
After a rocky first inning, senior
Eric Keaton settled down and wound up pitching 7.2 innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. Bearjar was 2-for-3, while Michal finished 2-for-4 with an RBI off his home run.
Geneva is currently scheduled to play Oberlin next, hosting the Yeomen in a non-conference matchup this Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00 p.m., should the weather cooperate. The men will then resume PAC play with a doubleheader at Westminster on Saturday, April 4.
