Softball Earns Win in Ten Innings over Hiram in Resumed Game

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team was able to get one of its games in against Hiram on Tuesday afternoon on Conrady Field from last week's postponed doubleheader, with the Golden Tornadoes outlasting the Terriers in ten innings in game one, 5-4.  The second game of the doubleheader was postponed again, this time due to a lack of daylight after the long completion of game one.  Geneva improved to 21-6 overall with the win, 10-3 in the conference.

The doubleheader began last Tuesday at Hiram, with game one getting suspended in the top of the fourth inning with the score tied at 4-4.  By conference rule, the games are to be made up at the visiting team's home field, and the games were scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at Geneva.  However, a heavy thunderstorm came through that caused the first game's start to be delayed until 5:30 p.m.

The first game that started last week at Hiram was played in cold and rainy conditions.  Junior Kyra Wilcox got Geneva on the board in the first with an RBI-single, scoring junior Molly Shelley.

Senior McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle, and the weather conditions picked up in the bottom of the second inning, giving her problems commanding her pitches.  The Terriers took advantage by scoring four runs on two walks, a hit batter, three wild pitches, an infield single and bloop single to right.  All four runners scored before an out was recorded, but Rapp found her command later in the inning and retired the final three hitters to prevent further damage.

Geneva pulled even in the top of the third when junior Aliya Ottaviani's line drive to center went over the centerfielder's head and rolled all the way to Hiram's deep centerfield wall, allowing her to round the bases for an inside-the-park home run, while also driving in seniors Justine Robbins and Mallie Ruscitti.

The game was ultimately suspended in the top of the fourth, which is where the game picked up on Tuesday.  The conditions were significantly better on Tuesday, and the pitchers controlled the rest of the game.  Geneva had the only real chance in the early innings, putting runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't push a run across.

Neither team managed another run through the ninth inning, and in the tenth the teams began placing a runner at second to start the inning.  For Geneva in the top of the inning, that was Shelley, and she promptly stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilcox.

Hiram bunted its placed runner over to third in the bottom of the tenth.  Senior Sophia Tvaroch relieved Rapp and induced a weak groundout to third, which kept the runner from scoring.  After a walk, Tvaroch retired the final Terrier to finish the game, earning her the save.

Rapp earned her eighth win of the season, pitching 9.1 innings between the two days while allowing six hits and four runs, striking out five.

Ottaviani led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run and three RBIs.  Wilcox drove in the other two runs, while Shelley stole two bases and scored two runs.

Geneva will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Grove City, starting at 3:30 p.m.  The second game of the doubleheader against Hiram will be made up on a later date that has yet to be determined.
