BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva men's tennis team struggled against Franciscan University on Friday afternoon, dropping their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match with the Barons 5-2. The Golden Tornadoes earned victories in No. 4 and No. 6 singles, but it wasn't enough to win the overall match. Geneva's record slips to 4-8 overall, 2-5 in the PAC, and they now need to win their final match of the year to have a shot at qualifying for the PAC playoffs.
Senior
Braiden Smalley and sophomore
Ben Busler combined to win the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, but Franciscan took the next two flights to earn the doubles point.
Junior
Thayne Bodenmiller and freshman
Evan Hancock were the two singles victors for the men. Bodenmiller won the fourth singles flight 6-4, 6-3, before Hancock came away with a 6-4, 6-3 victory of his own in No. 6 singles. Senior
Owen Landis put up a hard fight in No. 5 singles as well, battling to a tiebreaker with his opponent in both sets, but he wound up dropping both 7-6, 7-6.
Tomorrow's contest against Waynesburg is critical for the men. A win puts them in good position to qualify for the PAC playoffs, while a loss ends their season. The match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. on the Blackhawk Courts.
