BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team clinched a spot in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs on Saturday afternoon, defeating Waynesburg 4-3 at home in its final match of the regular season. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 5-8 overall, 3-5 in the PAC.
Geneva had to battle to win the doubles point. Senior Braiden Smalley and sophomore Ben Busler easily took No. 1 doubles 6-1, but the Golden Tornadoes dropped their match in No. 2 doubles. The doubles point came down to the result in No. 3 doubles, and senior Owen Landis and freshman Luke Crawford pulled out a narrow win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).
Smalley got the men off to a good start in No. 1 singles with an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory. Crawford added a victory in No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-4, and junior Thayne Bodenmiller clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in No. 4 singles. Landis and freshman Evan Hancock took their matches in No. 5 and No. 6 singles to third-set tiebreakers before eventually succumbing.
The PAC Quarterfinals will begin on Tuesday. Geneva will enter as the No. 6 seed and will travel to face the No. 3 seed Franciscan, a squad the men lost to just yesterday in a makeup match from earlier in the week.
