Baseball Struggles at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team had their hands full with Chatham University on Monday afternoon as the Cougars took both games of the doubleheader, with Geneva losing the first contest 11-1 and the second one 9-2. The Golden Tornadoes couldn't get much going at the plate in either contest, struggling to contain the Cougars' bats as well. The losses put Geneva's record at 13-15 overall on the season, 5-11 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Chatham improves to 22-10, 88-8 in PAC play.

The men scored first in game one, striking in the top of the first inning when a double in the left-center gap from sophomore Marco Chenet scored freshman Luke Troxell. Unfortunately, that was the best part of the game for the Golden Tornadoes. Chatham struck for seven runs over the next three innings, chasing starter Jason Triscila from the game, and Geneva never managed to push another runner past second base the rest of the way, eventually falling 11-1.

Junior Tyler Lemansky wound up pitching most of game one out of the bullpen for the GTs, staying on the mound for 4.1 innings. Chenet's double was the only extra-base hit for the men in game one.

Chatham went ahead early in game two as well, with a blooping hit in the second inning from Angelo DeLeonardis landing between two fielders along the right field line to plate three runners. He eventually came in to score as well, putting the Cougars in front 4-0.

Geneva didn't score until the sixth frame. Back-to-back singles from junior Michael Twigg and Troxell put runners at the corners for the GTs with one out, and then some heads up baserunning by Twigg while the pitcher wasn't paying attention allowed him to steal home, making the score 4-1.

Unfortunately, Chatham continued to pull away over the next few innings. Twigg tripled in the eighth frame and came home on an RBI by Troxell, but that was all the Geneva bats could muster the rest of the way in a 9-2 loss.

Senior Ryan Conover was the game two starter for the men, throwing the first 5.0 innings of the game and striking out two. Twigg was the only Geneva player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs offensively, and Troxell finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Geneva travels to Hiram College for their next game, another PAC doubleheader with the Terriers on Wednesday, April 22. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
