Softball Makes it Eight Straight Wins with Shutout Victory at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – The Geneva College softball team stayed hot on Monday, traveling to Hiram to make up the second game of a doubleheader, and the women led from start to finish in earning a shutout victory over the Terriers, 9-0 in six innings.  Geneva won its eighth straight game and improved to 27-6 overall, 14-3 in the conference.

Geneva got on the board quickly in the top of the first, receiving RBIs from senior Lexi Zanic and junior Faith Bonar.

Senior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle, and she continued her recent string of dominating performances.  The two runs were all that she needed, though the offense continued to add runs as the game went along.

The Golden Tornadoes doubled their lead in the top of the third.  Junior Kyra Wilcox brought home junior Molly Shelley, who opened the inning with a single and steals of second and third base, with a sacrifice fly.  Later in the inning, Bonar delivered another RBI-single, scoring senior Justine Robbins.

Geneva's offense kept increasing its run total with two more runs in the fourth.  One scored on a Terrier error, while Zanic brought home another run with a single.

Tvaroch continued to cruise through the Terrier lineup, and Geneva put up its biggest inning of the game in the sixth, scoring three times.  Shelley led off with a walk and stole second base.  She went to third on a single by Wilcox, and Zanic brought them both home with an RBI-triple.  Zanic scored on an RBI-groundout from Robbins to extend the lead to 9-0.

Senior McKenzie Rapp relieved Tvaroch in the bottom of the sixth and pitched a scoreless inning to close out the mercy-rule victory, 9-0.

Tvaroch earned her 12th win of the season by pitching 5.0 innings, giving up just four hits while striking out six.  She lowered her season ERA to 0.96 and her ERA in conference play to an even more impressive 0.58.

Zanic had the big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and four RBIs.  Bonar went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Shelley scored three times and stole four bases.  Wilcox added two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI.

Geneva will return to action tomorrow in completing its suspended game against Grove City that was stopped last week due to lightning.  The game will restart on Geneva's home field at 5:00 p.m., with Geneva leading 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning.
