Women’s Lacrosse Sends Off Seniors in Style with Big Win over Hiram on Reeves Field

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's lacrosse team finished its 2026 season on a high note after posting its biggest win in program history on Saturday night in its first-ever match hosted on Reeves Field, pulling away to defeat visiting Hiram 12-5 behind a standout match from its five seniors, particularly senior Hannah Skwarek.  Geneva's win closed its season with a victory total of three, and the win was the first in program history at home.

It was Hiram that actually jumped ahead early in a low-scoring first quarter, tallying the only goal of the opening 15 minutes.  The Terriers doubled their lead with a goal a little over two minutes into the second period to put Geneva in a 2-0 hole.

Junior Julianna Easley broke through for the Golden Tornadoes four minutes into the second period with a goal off an assist from sophomore Alyse Smith.  The game began to flip at that point, with Geneva taking control of the possession and the chances.

Skwarek tied things up six minutes later with a goal off a great feed from senior Adaline Bailey, the first of six goals for Skwarek, and she sent the Golden Tornadoes into the half with a 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal with just over a minute remaining in the period.

Skwarek scored her third straight goal two minutes into the third period off an assist from sophomore Madi DeRuiter, and junior Mara Fowlow found the back of the net a minute later to increase Geneva's lead to 5-2.

The only hiccup of the second half occurred four minutes later when Hiram's Janelle Steiner scored back-to-back goals 30 seconds apart midway through the third period to pull the Terriers within one.

Geneva dominated the rest of the match from there, though.  Fowlow scored her second goal of the match with four minutes left in the quarter to give the Golden Tornadoes a 6-4 edge going into the final period, and the Golden Tornadoes stormed away for a victory in the fourth quarter.

DeRuiter scored just seconds into the final frame, followed by another goal from Skwarek on an assist from Fowlow.  DeRuiter scored a sparkling goal, her second goal of the match, two minutes later, and Skwarek added her fifth goal with six minutes remaining off another assist from Bailey.  Skwarek scored her final goal of the match a minute later off an assist from Smith, and sophomore Taylor Robinson wrapped up the scoring for Geneva with an unassisted goal with three minutes left.

The final stats showed the control Geneva had in the match.  After the two teams closed the first quarter tied with three shots apiece, the Golden Tornadoes finished the match with a 36-11 advantage in shots and a 16-6 edge in shots on goal.

Skwarek finished with a program-record six goals on 12 shots.  She added five ground balls.  DeRuiter stuffed the stat sheet with two goals, an assist, six ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls.

Fowlow was also very active with two goals, an assist, five ground balls, five caused turnovers and five draw controls.  Smith also posted a big night with two assists, six ground balls, four caused turnovers and two draw controls.  Easley added a goal and six caused turnovers.  Bailey's two assists were her first two career points in the final match of her career, while Robinson finished with a goal, three ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Freshman Anarosa Cunningham finished with four saves in net, along with four ground balls.

Saturday's match brings a close to the careers of Skwarek, Bailey, Katelynn Bell, Katheryn Whitla and Brianna Thompson, with the program seeing significant improvement in its second season of varsity play.  Their departures will leave some big holes for Head Coach Liz Geyer to fill.
