Softball Wraps up Regular Season with Split against Baldwin Wallace

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team finished up its regular season on Monday with a non-conference split against Baldwin Wallace on Conrady Field.  The women couldn't get their bats going in game one, falling 3-0, but the Golden Tornadoes responded with a 5-1 victory in game two.  Geneva finishes the regular season with an impressive 32-8 overall record and now prepares to begin play in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament on Thursday.

Senior McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle in game one, and Baldwin Wallace put together a pair of two-out rallies in the first and second innings, scoring three times to put Geneva in an early hole.  Rapp silenced the Baldwin Wallace offense the rest of the way, along with sophomore reliever Micaiah Armstrong, to try to give the offense a chance to come back.

Unfortunately, the Golden Tornado offense was not able to do anything against Yellow Jackets' starter Bailey Licht, who was making her first start of the season.  Licht retired the first 19 batters she faced, including 16 groundball outs.  Junior Kyra Wilcox's one-walk in the bottom of the seventh was the only baserunner of the game for Geneva, who lost 3-0.

Senior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle in game two, and Geneva's first hit of the day was a loud one by junior Faith Bonar when she led off the bottom of the second with a home run over the left field fence.

The Yellow Jackets took advantage of a Geneva error in the top of the third to score an unearned run, but the Golden Tornado offense responded in the bottom of the fourth.

Senior Lexi Zanic led off with a single, and she went to second on a walk by senior Justine Robbins.  Bonar followed with a single to drive in Zanic, and Robbins scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.  Senior Jorja Koerner came up later in the inning with a big two-out single to drive in senior Madison Rapp and junior Malerie Branson, giving the Golden Tornadoes some breathing room with a 5-1 lead.

Tvaroch took it from there, pitching six innings before turning it over to Armstrong, who closed out the victory in the seventh.

Tvaroch moved her record to an impressive 15-2 on the season, giving up six hits and one unearned run during her outing.

Bonar had the big day at the plate in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.  Koerner also drove in two runs.

Geneva earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament, with is a double elimination format, along with a bye in the first round.  The Golden Tornadoes will play their first game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. against the winner of the earlier game between No. 3 Bethany and No. 6 Saint Vincent.  All the PAC Tournament games are being played at Westminster, who is the top seed for the tournament.
