BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's soccer team earned a hard-fought scoreless draw against Kenyon College Friday night, getting solid play across the back line and good goalkeeping from sophomore
Natalie Foster to come away with a result. Kenyon posed a difficult challenge for a beat-up Golden Tornadoes squad, but the GTs stood strong to come away with the 0-0 tie. Geneva's record moves to 2-2-1 following the match, while Kenyon sits at 1-0-2.
Several starters and important role players did not dress for Geneva prior to the match due to injury, so the women knew they faced an uphill battle from the start. Head coach
Micah Fitz prepared his team well, however, and they came out ready to go. After absorbing a few Kenyon attacking plays, the GTs had a good chance in the 12
th minute off a corner kick. Sophomore
Sarah Wells delivered a nice ball in toward the penalty spot, and sophomore
Cassidy Stopchick got a head to it, but there wasn't enough power on the shot to send it past the Kenyon goalkeeper and the game remained scoreless.
The visitors kept possession well throughout the first half and into the second, but they were not able to generate many good looks, with nothing too troubling coming Foster's way thanks to good defending by the Geneva back line. Freshman
Mackenzie Kubistek nearly sent Geneva in front in the 55
th minute when she got a foot to a beautifully-crossed free kick by senior
Noelle Beare, but the Owl keeper made a diving save to prevent the goal. Kenyon had one excellent opportunity with four minutes to play, placing a shot toward the bottom left of the net, but Foster got to the ground for the kick save, preserving the stalemate.
Foster made seven saves in the match to earn her first shutout of the season. The Golden Tornadoes took four shots, all of which hit the target, compared to seven shots on goal for the Owls.
The women begin Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play next week, traveling to Meadville, PA on Wednesday, September 16 for a match against Allegheny College. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
