WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team had a big challenge on its hands on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes traveled to take on Waynesburg, and the Yellow Jackets grabbed an early lead and defeated Geneva 3-0. Geneva is now 2-3-2 on the season, 0-1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Saturday's match marked the end of a difficult five-game stretch for the women against strong competition, with four of those matches taking place on the road.
Waynesburg got on the board 15 minutes into the match when a defensive miscommunication along Geneva's backline allowed Waynesburg's Amanda Pepe to get to a ball in the box first, and she poked in into the net putting the Golden Tornadoes into an early hole.
Geneva battled fairly evenly the rest of the half against the talented Yellow Jackets, though, holding the deficit to just one goal at the break.
The second half started poorly for Geneva when Waynesburg took the kickoff and went right down the field, scoring in just 20 seconds to double the Yellow Jackets' lead. Waynesburg added a third goal midway through the final period to finish off the scoring, 3-0.
Waynesburg finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots, 8-4 in shots on goal. Sophomore Natalie Foster made four saves in goal.
After playing much of the past three weeks on the road, the women will look forward to three straight home matches, beginning on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. start against Hiram on Reeves Field.
