BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Geneva College men's tennis team opened its season by edging Penn State Altoona on Friday night at Blackhawk Courts, 4-3. This is the first of two fall matches for the men, with the bulk of their season occurring in the spring.
The doubles portion of the match was tight. Junior
Ben Busler and sophomore
Luke Crawford won their match in No. 1 doubles, 6-4, but Altoona managed to win tight matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to win the doubles point.
Busler continued his strong night by winning another tight match in No. 1 singles, winning 7-6(2), 7-6(5). Altoona won No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but the Golden Tornadoes took the final three singles matches to secure the win. Sophomore
Evan Hancock won in No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2, sophomore
Joseph Kenneally won No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-1, and freshman
Hunter Hazelwood took the first set in No. 6 singles 6-0 before his opponent retired.
The men will play at least once more this fall with a match at Saint Vincent on October 7. Geneva had its first match of the fall rained out at Baldwin Wallace last Saturday, but the teams are hoping to be able to make that match up at some point this semester.
