Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Beats Elmira to Open Weekend

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Geneva women's volleyball team kept the good vibes rolling on Friday evening, defeating Elmira College in four sets (25-22, 25-17, 24-26, 25-13) to earn their second consecutive victory to start the season. The match was the first one in a series of three for the women this weekend, as they play twice more tomorrow in New York before heading home.

The Golden Tornadoes controlled the first set right from the get-go, going ahead 7-2 behind an ace and a kill from freshman Vanessa Crider and several Soaring Eagles errors. The hosts pulled back within one point multiple times during the rest of the set, getting as close as 19-18, but two kills from senior Katie Seboe and an ace by junior Laura Goonewardene put Geneva back in control and gave the women a 25-22 win in set one.

Set two started out a bit closer, and the two sides found themselves tied at 8-8 early on. Geneva gained a three-point edge thanks to a block by Seboe and senior Gracyn Lee, but Elmira continued to hang around. The GTs closed the set on a 7-1 run, however, to win it 25-17, with Seboe registering three more kills during that stretch.

The Soaring Eagles jumped ahead in set three, gaining a 15-10 advantage. Geneva pulled within one point at 22-21 before dropping the set 26-24.

That set loss seemed to fuel the women as they began the fourth set, with the team coming together to surge in front 14-5. Elmira never stood a chance after that, with the Golden Tornadoes closing on a 9-3 run thanks to multiple kills from senior Daphne Alexander and freshman Sarah Elkins. Geneva won the set 25-13 to seal the victory.

Alexander and Seboe each tied for the team lead with 11 kills apiece, getting four blocks each as well. On top of that, Alexander hit an incredible .688 and served three aces. Crider notched 17 digs to lead the team defensively, while freshman Chloe Borisuk served a team-best four aces. Freshman Kyla Kephart and Goonewardene split the setting duties, registering 18 and 12 assists each, respectively.

The GTs remain in New York tomorrow as they take on both Gallaudet and New England up in Elmira. The match against Gallaudet begins at 11:00 a.m., with the New England contest set to begin after that.
