Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Geneva Men Drop Heartbreaker at Thiel

Greenville, PA—The Geneva men's basketball team completed its four game road stretch by traveling to Thiel College on Saturday afternoon, and unfortunately for the Golden Tornadoes the road was not kind to them as they dropped this game in heartbreaking fashion, 57-55.  Thiel hit a 3-point shot with one second to go to steal away the victory.  Geneva's loss drops its record to 2-4 overall, 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Thiel improved to 3-2 overall, 1-1 in the PAC.

Just like the previous game against Bethany, Geneva came out strong, and when senior Jimmy Leichliter knocked down a 3-pointer midway through the first half, Geneva had a 14-10 lead.  Thiel responded by going on an 11-2 run to take back the lead before things evened out, and the teams went to halftime with the Tomcats leading 28-24.

Geneva started well in the second half.  Down 30-25, the Golden Tornadoes went on an 11-3 run to take back the lead, 36-33.  However, Thiel again responded to Geneva's run with a 14-4 run of its own to go back up 47-40.  To Geneva's credit, they did not give up and immediately cut the lead back down to one, 49-48, and the game was close the rest of the way.  A key Geneva turnover with just seconds left gave Thiel one more opportunity, and the Tomcats took advantage of the miscue and came away with the last-second win, 57-55.

"I love the way we battled," Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero said.  "They just made the last shot.  I'm proud of our heart, though."

Sophomore Ethan Moose led the offense again with 17 points.  Leichliter added 15 points along with three 3-pointers.  Turnovers ended up a being a big factor in the game, as Geneva ended up with 20 of them on the afternoon.

Geneva finally returns home next Wednesday, December 6, to take on Washington & Jefferson at 7:30 p.m.  The Golden Tornadoes finish out the semester with another home game on Saturday, December 9, at 3:00 p.m. against Saint Vincent.
