Women’s Soccer Succumbs to Grove City

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team got a first-hand look at arguably the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) when Grove City came to town for an afternoon match on Wednesday.  The Golden Tornadoes have made considerable strides this season, but the match served as a reminder there is still work to be done, as Grove City was too powerful for Geneva to contain in the 3-0 Wolverine win.  Grove City improved to 10-3 overall, 3-0 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 6-7, 2-2 in the PAC.

Grove City got on the board in the 13th minute when Krista Heckman slid a shot underneath a diving attempt from junior goalkeeper Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area).  Geneva almost equalized one minute later when freshman Lexi Dell (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) was played in on goal by senior Megan Schoeneweis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area), but Dell's low shot hit the near-post and bounced away.  It would prove to be Geneva's best chance to score on the afternoon.

Grove City doubled its lead shortly after when Maggie Williams took a feed and bounced one in off the far post in the 18th minute.  The Wolverines kept the pressure up all game long, forcing Lincoln into action multiple times to keep any further damage from occurring.  Grove City put the game away in the 73rd minute when Williams scored again, and the game closed out at 3-0.

"Grove City is really good," Head Coach Linda Sumner said.  "We knew going in that we were going to have our hands full.  Unfortunately, we're really banged up right now, and we're missing some key players, so our bench is really depleted.  I would have liked to have had a full strength team, but it still may not have been enough against a team like Grove City.  Hopefully we can get some of those players back soon, as we still have several key games coming up over the next couple of weeks."

If it wasn't for the play of Lincoln, the score could have been considerably worse.  Lincoln made multiple diving saves, and she ended up with 14 saves on the afternoon.  Grove City outshot Geneva 24-5, including 17-2 in shots on goal, indicative of the edge the Wolverines had in play in the match.

Geneva travels next to Washington & Jefferson for another important PAC matchup on Friday at 7:30 p.m.  The Golden Tornadoes won't return back home until Wednesday, October 24, when they host Waynesburg at 8:45 p.m. for their final home game of the season.
