Women’s Soccer Picks Up Huge Win at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – This is the type of win that could push the women's soccer team into the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs for the first time.  On the road, against a quality Washington & Jefferson squad, the Golden Tornadoes found a way to grind out a key PAC win, 1-0.  With the win, Geneva improved to 7-7 overall, 3-2 in the PAC, while W&J fell to 5-7-2, 2-2 in the PAC.

The first half played out to a scoreless draw, as neither team could find the net.  W&J did outshoot Geneva 8-5 in the half, but it couldn't get one past junior goalkeeper Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area).

Often times a game like this, low-scoring, tough, and physical, is decided by one moment of brilliance or one bad mistake, and on this night, it was Geneva's senior Megan Schoeneweis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) who delivered a stunning goal.  In the 54th minute, Schoeneweis took a pass out near midfield, dribbled 20 yards, and then took a perfectly placed shot from 30 yards out that went over a defender and then over a leaping W&J goalkeeper, but just under the crossbar, to give Geneva the lead.

W&J did not go quietly, though, as the Presidents' applied consistent pressure over the game's final 20 minutes.  In fact, W&J appeared to have found an equalizer with two minutes remaining, but the goal was waived off due to an offsides call that the home team and its crowd strongly disagreed with.  From there Geneva hung on for the 1-0 victory.

"This was a really big win for us," said Head Coach Linda Sumner.  "W&J is one of the teams in the PAC that we are competing with for a spot in the PAC playoffs, so to be able to pick up a win on their turf is huge.  We still have plenty of work to do over our last three PAC games, which will all be tough, but this is the type of win that can put us into position to qualify for the postseason."

W&J outshot Geneva on the evening 13-10, but Geneva held the advantage in shots on goal, 7-6.  While Schoeneweis was once again the offensive star, Lincoln was also key defensively, saving all six shots she faced for her PAC-leading fifth shutout of the season.

The Golden Tornadoes will now get a week off before they head back out on the road again for a match at Thiel next Friday at 4:00 p.m.
