Greenville, PA – It is always a scary scenario for any head coach when you go on the road to play against an opponent with nothing but pride to play for. On Friday night, Geneva head women's soccer
Linda Sumner and the Golden Tornadoes faced that very scenario as the Golden Tornadoes invaded Thiel College with much on the line for Geneva's play-off fate.
The pressure didn't seem to affect Geneva as it cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Tomcats. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play while Thiel fell to 2-12-3 and 1-5-1 within the PAC. The victory pushed Geneva past Waynesburg in the conference standings up to a 3
rd place finish with only a pair of conference matches remaining on the regular season schedule.
Geneva's
Lexi Dell opened the scoring in the 36
th minute to unlock a scoreless tie after firing a goal from inside the box after taking a feed from
Franki Kilmer. Geneva took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break but quickly build upon that lead in the second stanza.
Erin Houser scored the first of two unassisted goals in the 67 minute to double Geneva's lead and then she struck again in the 81
st minute to add an insurance tally.
Three goals were more than enough for junior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln, who posted her conference leading seventh shut-out of the season. Lincoln made four saves in preserving the shut-out and the victory for the Golden Tornadoes.
"We were very concerned about Thiel coming into the match," said head coach
Linda Sumner. "They have been playing well and we knew we could not let down for a minute. I am extremely proud of our effort tonight. We played well and have put ourselves in a really good place heading into the final week of the season."
Geneva hosts Waynesburg next Wednesday at 8:45 pm in the home finale before closing out the regular season at Chatham next Saturday.
