Second Half Surge Leads Geneva past Waynesburg and on the Cusp of Post-Season

Beaver Falls, PA – It was a long night at Reeves Field on Wednesday as the Geneva and Waynesburg women didn't kick-off at Reeves Field until close to 10 pm. It turned out to be worth the wait for the Golden Tornadoes as they won their third straight match by the count of 2-0. The victory moved Geneva's overall record to 9-7 including a 5-2 mark in the PAC while Waynesburg dropped to 7-6-2 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Golden Tornadoes are on the verge of qualifying for the Presidents' Athletic Conference play-offs for the first time with Chatham standing in their way on Saturday.

A victory on Saturday will clinch a spot in post-season or Geneva could get help elsewhere if need be to get the final play-off spot. The Golden Tornadoes could finish as high as third in the conference with a victory on Saturday.

Following a double overtime match in men's action, the women waited a bit longer to get things kicked off. The two teams waited even longer to find the net as the first 45 minutes were scoreless. However, it didn't take Geneva long after the second half whistle as Geneva's Erin Houser scored her team best ninth goal of the season in the 48th minute. Houser struck for her tenth goal of the season just five minutes later to give the Golden Tornadoes an added cushion on the scoreboard.

Geneva's defense and specifically junior goalkeeper Danielle Lincoln posted their third consecutive shut-out and conference leading seventh of the season. Lincoln made two saves to preserve the victory and send Geneva into a one-game showdown with Chatham on Saturday.

The play-off scenario for Geneva is easy with a victory.  If Geneva defeats Chatham in its match in Pittsburgh on Saturday at 5 pm, the Golden Tornadoes will secure the third seed for next week's PAC tournament. A loss on Saturday would then require a W & J loss against Waynesburg on Saturday to secure the fourth seed.

"I'm so proud of this group of young women," said head coach Linda Sumner. "They have done everything I've asked of them since day one and the results have followed. They work extremely well as a team and they are a unified group on and off the field. We have faced adversity and injuries throughout the season, but they continue to fight. We still have work to do, but this has been one of my most enjoyable years as a coach. Hopefully we can make in a memorable one for everyone and get into the tournament."

Should Geneva qualify for the PAC tournament, the semi-final matches are scheduled for next Wednesday and the finals would be held at the highest remaining seed a week from Saturday.
