Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Rough Day for Women’s Volleyball at Bethany

BETHANY, WV – The Geneva College women's volleyball team traveled to Bethany on Saturday afternoon riding a two-game winning streak with a chance to avenge a five-set loss to the Bison earlier this year.  Unfortunately, none of that momentum carried over as Geneva struggled all afternoon in a straight set loss, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19.  Bethany improved to 16-8 overall, 9-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Geneva fell to 12-10, 6-6 in the PAC.

Things went poorly right from the start for Geneva, which was never able to get on track against a strong Bethany squad.  Geneva fell down early and lost the first set.  The Golden Tornadoes battled back in the second set, and had a chance to pick up the set, but they couldn't close things out.  Any chance Geneva had of a comeback quickly went away in the third set, and Geneva ended the match without picking up a set.

"This was a really disappointing performance," Head Coach Wendy Smith said.  "Bethany is really good, so we knew we'd have to play well to win, but I really expected us to be more competitive this afternoon.  We had been playing better the past week, but today we fell back into our old ways when faced with one of the tougher teams in the PAC.  Some days I feel like this team is really close.  Then other days, like today, I am reminded we still have a lot of work to do."

Sophomore Daphne Hunsinger (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) had another double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs.  Senior Sydney McNulty (State College, Pa./State College Area) continued her strong play with a team-high 10 kills to go with 10 digs, while freshman Kayla Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) finished with a team-high 21 digs.

Geneva remains on the road when it heads to Chatham on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. match.  The Golden Tornadoes will then return home on Thursday to face W&J at 7:00 p.m.   That match will be Geneva's last regular season home match of the season, and Geneva will be recognizing its seniors before the match.
