Greenville, PA – The Geneva men's soccer team is in rare air in the final ten days of the regular season. It has not been a common occurrence for the Golden Tornadoes to be in must win situations in the regular season to qualify for the post-season. That is where Geneva found itself tonight as it visited Thiel College in a critical conference match-up. At the end of the night, the Golden Tornadoes inched closer to a possible play-off berth with a 3-1 victory over the Tomcats. The win pushed Geneva's overall record to 7-7-1, which includes a 3-3 mark in conference play. Thiel fell to 5-11-1 and 1-5-1 within the league.
The Golden Tornadoes will still need some help down the stretch to gain a post season appearance but all they can do at this point is worry about their own results. "We have left ourselves with no margin for error," said Geneva head coach
Gary Dunda. "We have no choice but to play every minute like the play-offs have already started. Tonight was a good result for us and leaves us with a great opportunity with one week left to go."
Alex Yoder opened the scoring for Geneva in the 14
th minute on a cross from
Liam O'Halloran. After taking that 1-0 lead into the halftime break, the Golden Tornadoes took just over two minutes into the second half to extend the lead.
Kevin Pasho found the back of the net in the 47
th minute, but Thiel cut that lead in half with its only goal of the night just seven minutes later. Yoder notched his second goal of the match in the 66
th minute to give the Golden Tornadoes some much needed insurance on the scoreboard.
Geneva out shot Thiel by a commanding margin of 27-3 with 14 of those shots being on goal.
Luke Nolan was back in the nets for Geneva and made a pair of saves to pick up the victory.
The Golden Tornadoes close out the conference schedule at home on Wednesday night when they host Waynesburg for a 6:45 pm kickoff. Geneva will honor its senior class prior to the regular season finale next Saturday evening when they host long-time foe Thomas More College for a 5 pm kick-off.
